ALISTAIR KING – CCO KINGJAMES
When a piece of work wins so emphatically large somewhere internationally, it’s usually a safe bet to predict that its ‘Golden Aura’ will carry it through locally. So I’m going to offer my picks based on what I’d like to see win rather than what I think probably will.
I love this piece of work, even though it makes me ever so slightly uncomfortable. Using brands to educate may well be frowned upon by certain people, but I think this is a cracker idea and I can absolutely see how it would be effective in what is ultimately a worthwhile cause.
The radio campaign is my pick for Grand Prix. I think it’s bang on and like nothing I’ve ever heard before. I also like the Press campaign for just being pretty.
Land Rover ‘Meeting Reminder’
It’s small and simple. But kinda cool.
Phillips ‘It Looks Bigger’
I’m not really the target market of course, but I can see how this would really hit the mark. Terrific little ad.
Radio: Lexus ‘Precognition’
I like ads that create a context for them to work, and this does it brilliantly. I think it continues building the impression that Lexus is the thinking person’s car.
Hot Wheels ‘Smallest Car Sound’
Another small idea, but such a lekker one, and in a place where you can bet Hot Wheels target market would be. If I was hot wheels, I’d develop my actual cars to do this. It’s how lego have evolved.
Film: Coronation ‘Doctor’ – Lots of Craft awards.
I really like this commercial. I’m not sure it will win the biggest of the prizes, but I think it should win some craft awards.
Film: NATIONAL BLOOD SERVICE ‘UNCLE FRANK / PRAWN SURPRISE’
I think these ads are really well made and they feel very different to so much of the other film that has been entered. It’s a bit of a soft subject, but I hope they do well.
Film: Chicken Licken ‘Truck Driver’
This is one of the nicest Chicken Licken ads I’ve seen in a very long time. You just smile from start to end, and then you really feel for the guy.
Radio: Chicken Licken: 0% Transfat ‘Rollercoaster / Wedding / Anniversary / Charity / Everest’
Not the radio ads that make you feel all warm inside, but definitely the ads that make you think twice about eating their rival. I admire any campaign that can be this competitive without actually getting into trouble.
Skittles ‘Smuggle the Rainbow‘
I thought all the elements of this were very nicely produced. And based on a really good truth – South Africans seem to make really good mules.
