SA CANNES PREDICTIONS BY JUSTIN GOMES – ECD AT FOXP2 AND CREATIVE CIRCLE CHAIRPERSON
So it’s that time of the year, when thousands of hopefuls from the San Fernando Valley descend on Cannes wearing six inch hills and the latest in silicone upholstery. You can never be 100% sure, but I struggle to see how Lexington Steele can lose out on Best Male Performance this year and Jenna Haze must have the Best Female Performance all wrapped up.
Oh wait, my predictions for the Cannes Lions Festival?
In that case, here goes nothing
ONE SCHOOL AT A TIME ‘PROJECT ENGLISH‘
(JOE PUBLIC) This is the strongest piece of radio to come out of South Africa in years and would no doubt have won the Loerie Grand Prix last year if it had been eligible. (Charities and pro-bono clients aren’t considered for Loerie Grand Prix’s.) I would say this is South Africa’s best shot at Gold. Could it go one further? It couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of guys.
VOLKSWAGEN GENUINE PARTS ‘THE SINGING CHILDREN OF THE R33 / THE UNIONDALE HITCHHIKER / THE BLACK HEARSE OF STANDERTON‘
(Ogilvy CT) Although it hasn’t done as well at the award shows as I would have liked, I’m still a big fan of the VW Genuine Parts “Haunted Roads” radio campaign – it’s a really lateral take on genuine parts that I haven’t heard before.
MAIL AND GUARDIAN ‘FREEDOM IS KNOWING – TWIN TOWER’S JUMPER / DIANA TUNNEL / NAPALM GIRL / MANDELA IN PRISON‘
(TBWA\HUNT\LASCARIS) With powerful, iconic imagery at its disposal, this is the kind of campaign that traditionally does well at Cannes. I felt the “Diana Tunnel” execution needed the entry title to close the loop, but then I’m sure the European judges will be as familiar with the image as we are with Nelson’s prison.
MODJAJI BOOKS ‘BOOKLY‘
(NATIVE VML) Will Mr Graham Warsop be relieved of his two cases of Bollinger champagne this year? I’m not sure, but I reckon this is South Africa’s best shot.
PRUDENTIAL ‘SOUTH POLE‘
(LOWE AND PARTNERS CT) Ok, so I’m probably in the minority nominating this spot, but there’s something magical about this piece that gets me every time. In a category where most of the ads look and feel the same, “South Pole” stands out by a country mile and the client should be applauded for buying Keith’s treatment. I hope to see it come through in the craft categories at Loeries.
JOBURG ZOO ‘ANACONDA ESCALATOR’
(Y&R South Africa) I struggled to find an outdoor shoe-in, ala #Network’s Nedbank solar-powered billboard a few years back but I liked this simple, slithery execution that will no doubt have school-kids pestering their parents to take them to the zoo. Hope there was a video to accompany the entry for full effect.
